Year 2
Lesson 1 / Year 2
Professor Ciano sat in her chair, waiting for the arriving students to take a seat.
Once they were all seated and their attention was focused on her - she started speaking.
"Hello my dear students!" she said, standing up.
"Welcome to year two of our learning! I can't express my happiness seeing how you tried and worked hard to pass my exam! When I was in your place I did the same, worked hard for each subject I had!"
She smiled at the students.
"This year you will learn about Transfiguration - what it is, what are Gamp's laws of Elemental Transfiguration, who teached Transfiguration at Hogwarts, et cetera, et cetera. It will be harder and more advanced but aren't you year two now? Aren't you far more capable? I hope you will enjoy the new material."
Professor Ciano allowed a little pause in her speech so that the students could keep track of what she was informing them of.
"Unfortunately...or not, I got a letter by a very dear friend of mine who lives in Czech Republic. She is also a Transfiguration professor at the Czech school of Magick and she asked me to go over there and help her with explaining some of the theory to Czech students! There is a lack of properly written books about Transfiguration over there and so I have to attend to the issue my friend has and help her. While I am absent, which will be for 4-5 weeks only - there will be another professor who will help you grasp the very point of Transfiguration and that is my brother Damian. I am positive that you will get along with him and that your attitude towards studying will stay the same."
Professor Ciano coughed slightly and then continued.
"We will start working right away! Luckily, I am here the next two days so you will have your first lesson with me. Please take out your quills and parchments. Today we will study about Gamp's laws of Elemental Transfiguration. We have a lot to write and explain so please - focus!"
She moved from behind her desk and grabbing a heavy and used parchment she stood in front of the class, looking each of her students before she continued.
"Transfiguration is the art of changing the form and appearance of an object and the vanishing of objects. That is the standard definition we will use to explain the subject Transfiguration. But! Can we use transfiguration as we please? Go over the limits and do whatever we want - bringing back the dead, maybe? Of course - no! Transfiguration is controlled and used according to Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration."
Pausing to let her students write down the important information, Professor Ciano allowed herself to smile seeing how worked up her students were!
"Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration is a law of wizarding physics. There are five Principal Exceptions to Gamp's Law. Today we will start with the first one and in the next 4-5 weeks we will devote to studying the Principal Exceptions only, one by one and in detail. It will require some logic to understand them!"
"Exception number one would be: food. We will now take a look at this conversation Harry, Ron and Hermione had back then in their time. Please pay attention to the words." Professor Ciano said and started writing on the board.
Soon the full text appeared:
"My mother," said Ron one night, as they sat in the tent on a riverbank in Wales, "can make good food appear out of thin air." "Your mother can't produce food out of thin air," said Hermione. "no one can. Food is the first of the five Principal Exceptions to Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfigura --" "Oh, speak English, can't you?" Ron said. (DH pg. 292/240)
"Also!" Professor Ciano added and continued writing on the board.
Once again, the full text appeared:
"I went through it and met Aberforth. He's been providing us with food, because for some reason, that's the one thing the room doesn't really do." "Yeah, well, food's one of the five exceptions to Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration," said Ron to general astonishment.(DH pg. 578/465)
"To explain this I will pass you one very simple statement - Food cannot be created from nothing." she said, waiting for the scribbling of quills to finish before she started again.
"It can be conjured and multiplied once it's in possession but never created our of air. Also, I would like to add something that I found out by reading. Since food cannot be created but only used if it exists - same goes with potions and potions ingredients! That is all I would like you to remember about the first of five Principal Exceptions."
Putting the parchment down on her desk again, Professor Ciano turned towards the students.
"I hope that what you learned today is clear to you. I will now summon food and share it with you. But I cannot create it out of the air! It is in my private chambers. Let's see!"
One soft movement with her wand and Professor Ciano brought a box full of candies in the air. Then she levitated it to the first desk in front of her.
"You may all now come - one by one! - and take the candy you fancy!" she said, smiling, as she went back to sit in her chair.
Before the class ended the homework appeared in gold letters on the board:
- How do we define Transfiguration?
- What is Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration?
- How many Principal Exceptions are there?
- Explain the First Principal. Use the examples I presented.
- What else cannot be created from nothing?
// What I said up there is true - I will be absent, teaching in Czech School of Magick with my dear Solopha. I will miss you guys but look on the bright side - you will get to meet Damian and of course, I will be back soon! :)
Your homework will be checked and graded by Damian - send it on: [email protected]
The homework up there brings you 20 points if you answer everything correctly and BE DESCRIPTIVE. Don't be afraid to write some more in it! :)
I wish you all a good day!
Lesson 2/Year 2
There was noone in sight when the students first entered the Transfiguration classroom but as soon as they were seated, a lean figure appeared out of the corner on the side where Professor Ciano's desk was.
He was lean and middle height. His skin was very pale and he had long black hair and piercing green eyes, like Professor Ciano's.
"Hello!" he said and smiled, chasing away the creepy atmosphere his appearance had created.
"My name is Damian Ciano, I am your Professor's brother and I will teach you transfiguration until Professor Ciano is back. Please feel free around me and address me as Damian!"
Damian smiled at the students again and then sat on the empty desk, casually.
"I was told that you started with Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration and learned the first principal. I will teach you the second one today - it's pretty easy!"
He waited few minutes for the students to get their parchments and quills out and then he started again.
"The second Principal Exception would be love. I am not sure at what point you are with potions but you must know that love can't be created - it can just be forced into someone, in an obsessive infatuation... with love potions or the Imperius curse."
Furious sounds of quills on parchment filled the silent room and Damian smiled once more, seeing how well the students of his sister did in class and how devoted to studying they were.
"To explain it better I would have to borrow a bit of History of magic. I am again not sure if you have learned about Tom Riddle and Merope Gaunt, about the conditions in which Tom Marvolo Riddle was created. Anyway, I will tell you!"
"Merope Gaunt was in love with the young and rich muggle, Tom Riddle. Being desperate about his attention and love she made a love potion and fed him with it from the first day till she couldn't proceed with it anymore. They had already escaped and she was pregnant when she stopped giving him the potion. Perhaps Merope expected him to have fallen in love with her after so many days spent together but he proved the opposite - escaping and leaving her alone."
Giving one narrow stare at nothing, Damian continued.
"So you can see - love can't be created with transfiguration, nor potions or spells, it is a feeling that is simply born inside of you. I am afraid I am not very well with expressing what love means but I am sure that everyone of you has an idea of what the second Principal Exception is."
Damian then got off the desk and paced around the classroom.
When he came back to the desk he turned towards the students.
"Your homework is to explain your view about the second Principal. You may use the story of Tom Riddle and Merope Gaunt as an example if you wish so. Full, descriptive and correct homework will bring your House 10 points! I expect to see a pile of homeworks on this desk by the end of the week. Class is over."
And he left the classroom.
Lesson 3/Year 2
Damian entered the classroom as the students were taking their seats.
"Hello students! I hope you are well. I am sorry I am late, could not predict the issue that suddenly slapped me." he said and laughed.
After he put his bag on the desk and took out some papers he faced the students.
"We continue with the Principal Exceptions, actually we reached the third one! Good. Today we will talk about money. Don't we all need money, eh?" he chuckled.
"You know that money can't really be created out of nothing, as food. True, leprechaun gold is a product of transfiguration but after certain time limit it vanishes. And also, do you remember the Geminio curse that was set on the goods in the Lestrange Vault at Gringotts in 1998? It is a spell which is used to duplicate, basically! But after some time the created gold, which has no real money value, vanishes too."
He paused a little and regarded the class with one of his smiles again.
"I think that it's not so hard to understand. There must be a restriction of this type - otherwise, there would be no families like Weasleys but everyone would be rich like the Malfoys. And that's not really the way, you'll realize it better once you grow up. I will write some of this on the board and you can copy it in your notebooks, if it will help you learn it." he said and immediately turned his body towards the board so he could write on the board everything composed in his head.
Few minutes later, he sat in the chair behind the desk and waited for the students to write down everything and for the class to end.
"For homework you have to explain the third Principal, in your own opinion, like the homework you had last week. Please feel free to add more examples and of course, you may use the ones I gave." Damian told the students just before the class ended.
"Have a wonderful day!"

Lesson 4/Year 2
Damian was in the little room, moving and placing boxes of all shapes, sizes and colours. "Hello!" he waved to the students and few minutes later seated himself on the desk. "It helps me think, you know. Sitting like this. In case you were wondering why I am not seated in the comfortable chair behind me." he said in a cheerful tone. "Fourth Principal Exception, right? It was first food, then love, money... Today we will learn the control of Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration concerning creation of life. You're aware that I can't make a man out of my cloak and I can't make a woman out of the dust on the shelves over there. Just as we can't created food, love and money out of nothing - we can't create life. Write this down, please." Damian paused for few minutes, clearing his throat once he saw the students were ready to continue. "You must now think of the Ressurection stone, but although I am not sure of the degree of your knowledge concerning this - I feel obliged to explain. The Ressurection stone could bring back, the very unhappy by the way, souls of dead. They could never be real people. Just a spirit, a ghost! So you see, it doesn't really create a new life! Same with the Philosopher's stone - it prolongs the life but it does not create a new one." he spoke. "There are of course, branches of dark magic which teach the art of creating life, called necromancy, but I am afraid it is not something you should take a look at. I'm also not sure just how much you know about the advanced science of muggles! They are capable of doing things you can't imagine, though I'd say they do things the harder way, without magic. But still, their skill, knowledge and advanced science is amazing! My thought was - they can create life but not with a wand and not out of air. They use some complicated methods of science that you won't ever learn, although I personally think it would be wonderful to know some of that!" Damian smiled and stood up. "I think that you are able to understand but please inform me if you have any issue with the material, I know it's hard and you're not used to studying this much but that's it. For homework you have the usual - explain the fourth Principal Exception. And please, at least TRY to do it in your own words, though you're free to use the examples I mentioned. Correct homework brings your House fifteen points. Good day!" After the lesson Damian went back in the little room. //Send your homework on [email protected]//
Lesson 5/Year 2 "Hello students!" Damian cried once he entered the classroom. "I expect of today's lesson to be short. We're finishing Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration and expect examination the next lesson we'll have." he said, looking stern. Few minutes of pure silence followed as Damian was trying to line up all of the parchments and quills he brought with him. "The fifth Principal Exception is, we'll assume, information. If we were able to transfigure information to knowledge of one we wouldn't be sitting here now, would we? No Hogwarts would exist, no books and no learning. It's simple. That is all you need to remember." Damian unlocked the door to the little room and entered, just to come back a minute later. "Excuse me for my rather hyper behaviour today, I am expecting my sister, Professor Ciano to arrive any minute! Yes, that means that this is our last lesson, for now though! We might meet again sometimes." Damian cheerfully informed the students and flashed them a smile. "I'd say you are free to study anything you want now and I will leave earlier. You have no homework today. Have a good day!" he added and took all of the parchments that were on the table before he left the classroom. Lesson 6/Year 2 Professor Ciano was going through some papers when her students started pouring inside the classroom. "Hello, hello!" she said and nodded to everyone, smiling here and there. As soon as everyone was seated and calm she stood up and faced the whole lot of them. "Hello again and I'm glad to see you, my lovely students! I've been a bit of homesick when I was in Czech Republic and I have a feeling of immense joy now that I am standing here." "I was informed by Damian that all of you were great the past few lessons and that you learned the basics of Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration. It's not that hard when you actually care to take your time and sit and read through it." Professor Ciano said and picked up a pile of sheets. "I think that Damian told you about the examination that is to be done today, don't be scared, the exam is not really hard and if you've understood the Principles and remembered the given examples you will do good! Now relax and take your time with the exam. Good luck!" After she finished with giving out the exams, Professor Ciano sat back in her chair and with a loud sigh went back to reading the papers in front of her. QUESTIONS: - What is the standard definition of Transfiguration? - How many Principal Exceptions are there to Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration? - Explain the first Principal Exception. At the end of the lesson she gave them 5 more minutes and then silently picked up the exams.
